this site

So a little post about this site. It started out as my next weblog. Me and Hardy ran high level bits for many years but ran out of steam and I posted the last post back in 2017. It was also then I stopped freelancing and went for employment instead. I have been blogging for both the companies (Go See Talents and Funnel) I have worked for in the years since then. Most lately on the dev blog Funnel have. During these years I felt the lack of something more personal so I started working on this site. The first post is from March 2021 but it was much later that I actually deployed it and got the domain name it has now.

But how did I build it? I decided to use the same engine as high level bits has been running on in its latest incarnation. (It went from blogger over drupal to nanoc.) So nanoc it was again. Several reasons for this: - it is built with Ruby so a language I like (at work we used Hugo which is nice but much more clumsy) - using something I know makes it is easier to get done. I tried to look for alternatives in the same space but no luck finding anything better - it is a static generator which I like so deployed it is just a bunch of mostly HTML files being served by nginx.

I use mostly markdown for posts and slim for layouts. It is really just what you need for markup. I also went for a simplistic design making sure that nothing is wider than 640 pixels. It makes many things much easier to deal with. No strange alterations for mobile for example. And images can just be full width without problem.

And then when I started my new company I was fortunate enough to able to call it Mazin Consulting and then I recycled this site into a company web site. The weblog is still around just not on the front page anymore.
