giacometti at moderna 🗺
Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966) at Moderna Museet here in Stockholm. I have known about this artist for some time. I have vague memories of an exhibition at the Museum of Cycladic Art in Athens that I stumbled over many years ago that put up ancient artifacts next to modern pieces like the typical thin Giacometti sculpture. It intrigued me enough to be kept as a memory. So now with an exhibition here I wanted to go and see it. Alberto has been gone for over 50 years now but still feels relevant. Maybe it is that connection with humanity that went before us that places his art outside of time. Well not all of it obviously. Entertaining to see copies of the surrealist paper Documents. Certainly dated. Papers are really a thing of the past when tou think about it. Sad - it is a great medium.
This piece is called Woman with her throat cut and was made in 1932 so quite an early piece at age 31. He had more of a surrealist trait in the early years. And - surreal as it may seem - he got kicked out of the surrealists due to opinion differences with the management…. wow. Another fun sculpture is The Couple. And that site is really a nice place to explore more with over 2200 pieces of art doumented.
